N3-Description

Bike route description

The great tour of the Empordà starts in the magnificent city of Girona and offers a complete itinerary across the Empordà, one of the most beautiful landscapes of Catalonia.

Cyclists will have a fantastic view of this region, inland and coast. In few kilometers, riders will  see a great variety of landscapes , such as medieval villages, little coves or traditional fishing villages. It’s a challenging route for medium level cyclists, due to its gradients that include safe mountain passes between 5 and 10km. This route also takes you to Cap de Creus, the most eastern point of the Iberian Peninsula.

N3-Must-do

Must do & must see

Take your time in the village of Cadaqués, where Dalí used to live and work, and admire the artistic genius in Cadaqués, Figueres and Púbol.

Visit a cellar and taste the local wine of the Empordà, internationally recognised.

Trip Itinerary

Arrival day
In Girona there is plenty to see and do. The city is famous for having one of the best preserved Jewish old towns in the world, the Cathedral boasts one of the largest stone vaulted spaces in Gothic architecture and the walk along the cities ancient walls is a recommended highlight.
Stage 1: Loop Girona (65 Km 668m+)
Delivery of the GPS and necessary documentation in our office. Bike fitting if bikes are rented. The first day you discover the inland country side of the Llémena Valley with his big ancient farms. After surrounding the small volcano of Adri, you continue crossing some humid and wooded areas. Today is a warm up ride.
Stage 2: Girona – St Feliu de Guixols (58 Km 672m+)
The route starts south through a plane until reaching Llagostera. From there you start the climb of Sant Grau (465m). After passing the col, a great descent with fantastic views over the Mediterranean sea will be recorded on your memory for the rest of your live. This coastal road has been used for the Tour de France in 2009. You finish the ride at the beach of Sant Pol, just next to the main beach of Sant Feliu.
Stage 3: St Feliu - Torroella de Montgrí (61 Km 483m+)
Starting from Sant Pol, you cross Platja d’Aro, Calonge and Palamós, 3 touristic villages in front of the sea. Also on the coast you will reach Calella, a cute fisherman village with its houses right in front of the beach. Calella is considered one of the best villages of the Costa Brava. Starting from Calella you deal with the short but really steep climb to the lighthouse of Sant Sebastià (climb 2 km 150m+). After that you climb to Begur and reach the gulf of Pals with its long sandy beach. From there you ride inland to Pals, a famous medieval village. It’s really worth to spend some time walking on its narrow streets. After crossing some more medieval villages you reach Torroella de Montgrí, just under its castle on the top of the mountain.
Stage 4: Torroella – Castelló d’Empúries (52 Km 190m+)
Today is an easy ride. This stage enables riders to cycle quietly towards the beaches in Empúries and l’Escala. In Empúries we recommend you take the time to visit the archeological site with Greek and Roman ruins dating from 600BC, the gateway of the classic cultures to the Iberian Peninsular. The route finishes in Castelló d’Empúries with a stunning cathedral that shows how powerful the village was in the ancient time.
Stage 5: Castelló - Perafita - Figueres (69 Km 1.052m+ or 80 Km 1.300m+)
From here you will cross a small wetland with an ornithological reserve, then the ride climbs the mountain pass of Perafita. Optional ride (11km) to reach Cadaqués, where famous artist Dalí used to live and coming back climbing the Perafita col again. From there you start descending to the flat area until reaching Port de la Selva. From there, another climb brings you up to the abbey of Sant Pere de Rodes and later you descend to Figueres where you stay overnight. We really recommend visiting the Dalí Museum, with its surrealistic paintings.
Stage 6: Figueres -Girona (65 Km 627m+)
Today you will ride on quiet back roads through the undulated inland combining pine forests and agriculture areas, with many cozy villages. Finally you will climb up to the Sanctuary of Els Àngels as a “happy end”, with spectacular views. You will finish the route in Girona, where you can have dinner at one of the amazing restaurants downtown.
Departure day
Departure from Girona after breakfast.

Excellent and highly recommended bike rental place in the heart of Girona. Close to the centre so probably close to anywhere you'd stay if you were staying centrally.Bike was lovely (BMC TeamMachine SLR01). Full di2, disc brakes, 12 speed, carbon rims, etc. Lovely and fast on the flat and rolling. Great immediate braking on the long or technical descents. Not bad at climbing either and very well priced compared to other bike rentals I've done.Staff were very friendly and helpful and communication when required was quick and effective. I'd arranged to pick up the bike on the day after arriving but managed to pick it up last thing the day before after contacting them. Pick up was quick and simple. Bike fit was easy on a rig in the shop. Di2 charging cable provided and I was ready within 20 minutes. Returning was equally quick and easy. Would definitely use again if I'm in the area. Highly recommended.

We loved renting our bikes and taking a self guided tour through cycleTours Catalonia. The team was very kind and knowledgeable about the area. They took the time to walk us through all the routes. They were also super responsive when we called them for help. Additionally, the gravel bikes we rented were great, we were apprehensive to rent because we love our own bikes but we ended up being very happy with them. Would highly recommend!

I have hired a road bike from CycleTours Catalonia twice now and each time they have delivered. Efficient friendly service, great value for money and recommendations for local routes if you need them. This time I went for a BMC Team Machine SLR Two, which was super light and speedy and in great condition. The online booking engine is simple to use. See you next time!

I had a last minute change of plans so dropped by the shop the night before bike collection day. The staff were super friendly and very helpful, providing some route plans and asking if I wanted to take the bike early. Overall I had a great experience riding around Girono fantastic roads and beautiful scenery, I did get a couple flats which were due to an issue with the wheel rim but the bike overall was well maintained.Would definitely use this shop again next time I’m in town.

The service and bike hire were both amazing and flawless. I picked up the bike and was greeted by a friendly mechanic who made the adjustments to the bike fit I wanted and I was on my way to riding. Returning the bike was also pleasurable and easy. I would easily recommend Cycletours Catalonia to anyone in need of a rental or bike tour.

Fantastic bike rental company!I have hired bikes from lots of different companies in lots of different locations and have never received this level of service. Everyone I talked to was friendly and extremely helpful. They also were able to help me out even though I completely messed up my booking. The bike I rented was very well specced, in amazing condition and had no issues at all. And the price was great and included a cycle bag with items to repair any problems I may have had.I will 100% use them the next time I'm in Girona and would highly recommend them to anyone.

My husband and I did a 5 day self directed bike tour of Costa Brava. It was incredible. The gravel bikes were in great condition. I rented the ebike. It worked very well for me and Paul loved his BMC gravel. The hotel accommodations were first class and the breakfasts included were varied and delicious. We absolutely love the coffee wine and food in Costa Brava. Our tour took us on greenways, less travelled roads, coastal visas, farmers fields and walled villages. We absolutely loved everything. Manel and staff were exceptional and very responsive to our needs. Thank you for a lifetime experience we will alway remember !

They can’t do more to help! Great bike selection, and advice, including booking a taxi to our start point in Vic. Our late return, gone 6 when they close, was not a problem, even our filthy bikes were immediately washed and all for a great price.

We did the 7 day self-guided tour of Emporda on road bikes and it suited us perfectly. The bikes were new and in great shape. The route was very well chosen, little traffic, great variety and some fine passes. The hotels were of a very high standard, and the staff remarkably friendly. What more can I say!
