In Girona there is plenty to see and to do. The city is famous for having one of the best preserved Jewish old towns in the world, the Cathedral boasts one of the largest stone vaulted spaces in Gothic architecture and the walk along the cities ancient walls is a recommended highlight.
Stage 1: Loop Ride Girona - Adri (38Km 750m+)
Today you will ride on the western side of Girona known for its beautiful
single trails and picturesque landscapes. The Adri valley and the volcano
of Adri add a unique touch to the ride. As you pedal through the Adri
valley, you’ll be surrounded by lush greenery, with the valley offering
stunning views of the surrounding hills and landscapes. The trail will
take you through forests, open fields, and alongside gentle streams. The
volcano of Adri adds an intriguing element to the ride, as you pass by its
dormant cone and catch glimpses of unique rock formations.
After exploring the Adri valley and enjoying the views from the volcano,
it’s time to descend back to Girona. This part of the ride offers
thrilling downhill sections, where you can let loose and enjoy the speed.
Stage 2: Girona – Sant Feliu (55 Km 570m+)
Kick off your journey from the center of Girona, leaving south
direction, where you’ll enjoy the transition from urban surroundings to
more natural landscapes. The Greenway offers a pleasant path for
cycling, with the sounds of nature replacing the city buzz. Approximately
5km from your starting point, you’ll leave the Greenway and begin your
ascent into the Gaverres range. This part of the ride introduces elevation
changes and a more challenging terrain. The mix of single tracks and
non-paved roads adds variety to the ride. As you navigate through the
Gaverres, you’ll have the chance to immerse yourself in an
amazing forest of cork oak trees. These trees are a prominent feature of
the landscape and a significant part of the local economy.
After exploring the Gaverres, you make your way back to the
Greenway. The culmination of your biking journey leads you to the cove
of Sant Pol, where your hotel awaits. This tranquil beach offers clear
water, inviting you to relax and refresh after a day of riding. Swimming in
the calm waters is a perfect option to unwind.
Stage 3: Sant Feliu de Guixols – Calella de Palafrugell (59 Km 587m+)
The start of itinerary takes you on a climb back to the Gavarres. While this stage might have more ascent, the effort will be
rewarded with amazing views over the coast and the ocean.
After enjoying the coastal views, the ride continues to the second part of
the itinerary, leading you to Cala Castell. This well-preserved cove on the
southern part of Costa Brava is a hidden gem. The turquoise waters of
the Mediterranean provide a stunning backdrop for relaxation and
exploration. It’s a perfect spot for a picnic and a refreshing swim.
As you approach the end of the ride, you’ll encounter a final climb
before arriving in Calella. This climb is notable for a unique sight: a hut
with a door design inspired by Salvador Dalí. The surreal touch adds an
artistic and whimsical element to your journey.
The conclusion of your biking adventure brings you to the charming
village of Calella. This fisherman’s village is known for its well-preserved
houses that line the seafront. The historical and coastal atmosphere
offers a perfect scene for unwinding after a day of riding.
Stage 4: Calella de Palafrugell - Torroella (43km 685m+)
Starting in Calella, you’ll begin your journey by ascending to the town of
Begur. The highlight here is the castle perched on top of a hill. This castle
offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, which sets
the tone for the rest of your trip.
Upon reaching the castle, you’ll be treated to a sweeping view of the
Empordà plain. This region is known for its rich agricultural land and its
proximity to the sea. The combination of fertile fields and a coastal
backdrop makes for a stunning visual contrast.
As you continue, your route takes you through one of the region’s
significant dune areas. This area is covered by a Mediterranean
pine forest.
Your journey will lead you to the medieval village of Pals. This village is
noteworthy for its historical charm and well-preserved architecture.
Taking the time to explore Pals is recommended, as its medieval
character can transport you to a different era.
Your final stop for the day is Torroella de Montgrí, situated after crossing
the river Ter. This village is remarkable for the presence of the Montgrí
Castle, which stands atop a rounded mountain.
Stage 5: Torroella – Figueres(63 Km / 541m+)
Starting from Torroella, you’ll embark on a climb up the Montgrí massif,
a small mountain range. The mention of “funny single tracks” suggests
you’ll be exploring exciting and possibly challenging trails as you ascend.
The journey through this landscape is both adventurous and
visually rewarding.
Upon reaching L’Escala, you’ll encounter the captivating Greek and
Roman ruins of Empúries. These ancient ruins, located right by the sea,
offer a glimpse into the historical significance of the area. The
combination of the archaeological site and the scenic sea view makes
this a special stop.
Continuing your journey, you’ll cross through the main agricultural
region, where apple trees abound. This is a peaceful and scenic
part of the trip, with orchards and fields creating a serene atmosphere.
After passing Peralada, which is known as the capital of the vineyard area,
you’ll head inland towards Figueres.
Arriving in Figueres is a highlight due to its association with Salvador Dalí,
the renowned surrealist painter.
Figueres is Dalí’s hometown, and it houses the Dalí Theatre-Museum,
showcasing his unique artistic creations.
Stage 6: Figueres – Flaçà – Girona (65 km / 780m+)
Departing from Figueres, you’ll venture through a combination of
wooded areas and agricultural zones. This mix of landscapes likely
provide a pleasant transition from urban environments to more rural
surroundings. Passing through small villages along the way offers
insights into local life and architecture.
Upon reaching the Ter river, you’ll cross it to continue your journey.
As you follow the river’s course, you’ll eventually arrive at Flaça. This
is a notable point in your journey, offering a change in scenery as
you move from the riverbanks to the flat terrain.
Optional shortcut: Taking the train from Flaça to Girona could be a
convenient alternative to continue your journey.
